Again into the breech. (Not "once more," as I suspect there will be more intos after this one.)
347 pages here. So, what...4 days?
Day 1 (DDRD 2,596) December 8, 2024
Read to page 90. Another 🔥one. And so many characters to love...which is really what moves me the mostest. I've been telling myself that I should try to Dow it down a but, that 90 pages a day is not sustainable, but I'm not do certain that that's true. After all, today I spent three hours in church, two hours watching Alien: Romulus, an hour and a half watching some insane Star Wars show (you kniw, for the kids), made dinner for three, spent an hour and a half in the car, and still hit the 90. 💪
"Having a cat is one small step from having two cats, and to be a single woman within a syllable of fifty in possession of two cats is tantamount to declaring life over." (42)
Well...I'm not a woman and I'm more than a syllable past fifty, but if the shoe fits, I suppose I must wear it. 😟
"...this was what happened: you turned into your mother, unless you turned into your father. That, anyway, was what happened if you let life smooth you down, plane away the edges that made you different." (73)
Day 2 (DDRD 2,597) December 9, 2024
Read to page 180.
"When he'd finished, he produced an unbranded packet of cigarettes: stubby, filterless, lethal. A health warning would have been like subtitles on a porn film. Utterly beside the point." (99)
This Mick Herron is a funny feller.
Started looking ahead to the next book, Real Tigers, and heavens to betsy, it's OUT at the library, and when I put in a request, I was 2 of 2. Not good. Looked at all of my inline bookstores, and most were more expensive than I wanted. Just when I was thinking I would have to buy the Kindle version (at $9.99!), I thought I'd have a look at Internet Archive. Wasn't hoping too hard, given that this book is relatively new but https://archive.org/details/realtigers0000herr !!!
So I shall be reading Real Tigers when I finish this one...and the novella that comes between them. Thanks once again, Internet Archive!
Day 3 (DDRD 2,598) December 10, 2024
Read to page 280. Took Jacqueline to choir practice, thus had an extra hour and a half of reading time. In fact, still have some of it left, so I think I'll read some more. A little hard to focus with the organ bearing and two dozen people singing, but I am large, I contain close attention.
Read to page 300. Tomorrow is it, then. Interesting how substantially things were changed for the tv adaotation. I'm sure some were for budgetary reasons--ordinance explosions are undoubtedly expensive-- but what about mom the pilot? Maybe something will pop up in the last fifty pages.
Day 4 (DDRD 2,599) December 11, 2024
Read to page 347 (The End).
Here's a good word I haven't thought of in a decade or two:
lour, loury
less common spellings of lower, lowery
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lour
Also, Lamb remembers falling asleep on a park bench, holding an empty coffee go cup, and awakening to find coins in it. Perfect.
The ending of thus was very different from the tv version... not better, but more satisfying, I think.
So...after all these 90 (+ sometimes) page reading days, today was a mere 47. Might have to have a bit of a look at "The List" novella which follows it (according to our friends at Wikipedia), which I just happen to have checked out from the library.
