I'm not sure why I read Convergence (2015--written by Jeff King, with art by Carlo Pagulayan). The art looked pretty good. It was free on ComiXology Unlimited. Those were factors. But I think the main thing in my mind was that big crossovers which are based on multiple universe storylines invariably bring Kamandi into the mix at some point.
I almost gave up after the first few pages. Jeff King's writing just didn't work for me. For one thing, I felt that I had seen this plot before. Several times. For another, the story just didn't seem to go anywhere. I felt like I'd read a page, turn to the next, and read the same dialogue again.
But for some reason I kept on reading, and eventually I reached the point where it became a "Well, shit, I might as well finish this stupid thing." So I did. And I would certainly recommend that you not bother. However...my Kamandi instincts were right (obviously--title of this post, right?), and if you're a Kamandi fan, I'm going to save you the trouble. Here's the entire run of Kamandi appearances (in order of their appearance) in this series: 2 panels and a variant cover. (I've added close-ups of the panel appearances.)
Omac really bulked up for this one, didn't he?
SOMEbody's been working hard on their Mike Mignola swipes. BTW, for the sake of completeness, there's another panel in Convergence which is obviously Kamandi related...a messed up State of Liberty with some human-is apes all over it. But it didn't feature The Boy Himself, so I didn't think it warranted inclusion.
Pretty lame, right? Especially that last one. Check out the close-up: Kamandi looks like an aging body builder who's been on a three week bender.
So that's my review of Convergence. A very weak crossover in which everything goes exactly as you'd think it would go, with trite dialogue and absolutely no character development. And not even a trace of humor, either. If you're going to do a story like this, you could at least get a writer like Tom Taylor to do the honors. He could have brought some life to this corpse.
And there are other Convergence series? Oh, man. If there are any Kamandi appearances, let me know, okay? Or better yet, do a review and put up the Kamandi moments. Unless Tom King writes it, of course.
