DDR: Seiobo There Below by László Krasznahorkai

451 pages.

A long time ago I was in the Crescent Hill library looking for something or other beginning with a K in the Fiction section. As I was peering at the titles, I saw a white spine with golden lettering. It was so pretty that I had to pull it off of the shelf. It was Seiobo There Below. I ended up checking it out, and started reading it very soon after. It was very difficult reading. I thought about giving it up, but that is really not my way (with a few exceptions, for reasons unknown, but time will tell), so I kept at it. And at some point I was swept up in it. And after that I couldn't get enough Krasznahorkai. I've now read all his works which have been translated into English. This is the first of his major works which I've returned to, though. (Not for lack of love.)

Day 1 (DDRD 3,286) November 3, 2026

Read to page 30. Have to admit that this is hard getting into. Krasznahorkai is not for the faint of heart. Or mind. But I'm determined...and since this is one of my all time favorite books (with The Brothers Karamazov, Democracy in America, History of Civilization in England, Bleak House, I Am Radar, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, VALIS, Waiting For Godot, Hamlet...there's a good run at my Top Ten, I think...for the nonce), I know that at some point the wheels will mesh and I'll be on my way.
