Brothers and sisters in Christ . . . I have a question for you. And I mean this sincerely.
I've been reading Father Frederick Copleston's A History of Philosophy, which is a massive, eleven volume work which traces the development of philosophical thought, primarily through a Christian focus, and this morning I happened upon this statement:
"There are two main ways of coming to a knowledge of God, first the study with the aid of the senses of God's self-revelation in Nature, and secondly the Bible. That Nature is to be regarded as a manifestation of God was, of course, a familiar theme in mediaeval thought."
That's from page 256 of Volume III, Late Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy: Ockham, Francis Bacon, and the Beginning of the Modern World.
As I was reading I had the television on in the background with the sound muted, as I like to look up every once in a while to think about what I've read, and I like to look at images while I'm pondering philosophical ideas. Well, as I looked up from the page after reading those two sentences about God and Nature, I saw that there was a story about Scott Pruitt. The story was primarily focused on some expenditures on his part which are being questioned, but there was also a reference to how President Trump was in favor of Mr. Pruitt because he had been so effective at eliminating EPA restrictions.
I don't think that there can be any argument reference the fact that eliminating these EPA restrictions increases the amount of pollution in our environment. The only question with respect to that is whether or not the financial benefit outweighs the damage that is incurred. Right?
But here's the thing: Christianity is not about cost analysis. In fact, Christ regularly encouraged or even demanded that His followers act against their own financial interests.
. . . if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well; and if someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two . . . .
Matthew 5: 40 - 41
Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more than all the others into the treasury. For they all contributed out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”
Mark 12: 43 - 44
. . . Jesus told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell everything you own and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.
Luke 18:22
So I don't think that a valid argument can be made on that count.
And here's the other thing: as was beautifully expressed in the quotation from A History of Philosophy, Nature is not only God's creation, it is a manifestation of God. I don't see how a Christian can argue with that, either.
So here's my question: How can you support President Trump, who gives his full support to Scott Pruitt, who is actively engaged in increasing the amount of damage that we human beings are doing to Nature? Putting all of the pieces I've laid out here together, I think it is valid to say that Mr. Pruitt's actions are literally despoiling the image of God. Why aren't you speaking up about that? If someone poured pig feces on your Nativity scene, wouldn't you be up in arms? And isn't what Mr. Pruitt is doing much worse than that?
I don't understand. I'd appreciate an explanation.
And then we can talk about the whole whoremongering thing.
