I'm not sure why I was so anxious to get my hands on Ultimate X-Men #1 (2024). I rarely buy Marvel books these days. And though I've dipped into X-Men comics over the years, I'm far from loyal to the title. Same for the whole Ultimate universe. And though I have heard the name Peach Momoko, I knew nothing about her or her work. But there was something that attracted me...like an avocado (🎩to Mr. John Lennon). So I picked up a copy and instead of letting it marinate on my To Be Read table, I sat down and went at it.
It was quite an experience. The art is unlike most comic book art. It's lighter in tone, thinner of line, less garish in color. And kind of Japanese-y...but not really in a manga or anime way. More like...water colorish. Very pleasing and low key. And the story? Well, it's not like any X-Men story I've ever read before. (And despite my earlier protestations, I've read hundreds of X-Men stories.) It was mostly about a lonely young girl who is trying to deal with the tragic death of a friend. There was a bit of super-heroish stuff in there, too, but not that much...and not your typical slug fest.
Oh, look...somebody at Marvel made a partially animated trailer:
Cool, huh?
I'm putting it on my hold list.
BTW, Hoopla has three titles related to Peach Momoko: Demon Days Treasury Edition, Demon Wars, and Women of Marvel. Try some, then buy some.
