Having finished all of his Barsoom and Tarzan novels (total of 38 books), Joe and I set our sights (and sounds--we read every word out loud) on the Pellucidar series on May 8th, 2017, when we began At the Earth's Core. I couldn't help but notice that I enjoyed the writing in that book more than any of my previous ERB reads, and that opinion continued to hold through Pellucidar and Tanar of Pellucidar, and it looks like it will continue to hold through our current read, Back to the Stone Age, as well.
In fact, for only the second time, ERB made me laugh out loud whilst reading one of his books. (And just as I wrote that, I realized that the first time was in Tarzan at the Earth's Core--which is actually the 4th Pellucidar novel.)
ANYway, here's the boffo stuff from Chapter VII: Flight of the Slaves, Back to the Stone Age:
Thorek turned toward the other slaves. "Some of you go into each cave and bring out the ladders," he said. "Let the women find thongs with which to bind them together."
"Who is chief?" asked one of the men so addressed.
"Who is chief?" asked one of the men so addressed.
"He is chief," replied Thorek, pointing at von Horst.
"He is not my chief, and neither are you," retorted the man, belligerently.
"He is not my chief, and neither are you," retorted the man, belligerently.
Von Horst was suddenly hopeless. How could he get anywhere, how could he accomplish anything, with such stupid egotists to contend with? Thorek, however, was not at all discouraged. He suddenly leaped upon the fellow; and before the man had time to gather his slow wits, lifted him above his head and hurled him from the cliff. Then he turned to the others. "Get the ladders," he said, and as one man they set about doing his bidding.
