This Week's Comics: March 6, 2022

Slow on the draw this week...and not a big draw anyway:

Fresh off of seeing The Batman, I was quite anxious to read Detective Comics #1055. And the story by Mariko Tamaki was, once again, quite good. Good enough that I've started poking around to see what else she has written...and I may even pick up one of her Lumberjanes YAs next time I'm in the library. Unfortunately, the art, by Amancay Nahuelpan, was not my cup of tea. It's not Big Foot by any means, but it was a little too cartoony for my taste...at least on this title. To me, Detective Comics really demands either a realistic style or something noir-y...and Nahuelpan is definitely not either of those things. Fernando Blanco, who does the art on the back-up story, would be a good choice. Speaking of, the back-up, "House of Gotham," continues to be interesting, too. Again I regret that there are only three more weekly issues of Detective on this run. I'm going to miss getting the fix.

Next up, Dark Knights of Steel #5. More story twists, more delightful art. I like this book so much that I almost bought the reprint of issues 1 - 3...even though I already have those issues. (It was a very nice reprint job...squarebound and a mere $6.99...but I ended up putting it back because (1) I already have the issues, (2) $6.99 is almost two other comic books that I don't have, and (3) there was only one copy left, and I thought it'd be better to leave this for somebody who wasn't able to get those first three issues. ANYway...#5 was a good read. I like the way that Tom Taylor lets you think where he's going with the reinvention of the heroes, then turns it around into new territory.

I saved Static: Season One #6 for last because (1) I love Milestone Comics, (2) especially Static, and (3) this is the last issue of the Season One run, and I wanted to savor it. And there was much to savor. I like the way that this book ties in to Hardware, for instance. Not in a way that requires you to read another book if you don't want to--not at all. But in a way that if you are reading both books, you get an even greater sense of a coherent universe. It's much more casual than a team-up kind of concept. It's more an awareness, a background rhythm. And the story is exciting and the characters are interested and vivid and real. But what I like best about this book is this kind of thing:

Mmm-hmm.

The good news is that Static: Season Two will be out in September. Here's hoping the same will be true for Hardware and Icon and Rocket. And that it won't be too long before other Milestone books are brought back.

Next Week:

Detective Comics #1056

Icon and Rocket: Season One #6
