"Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" & I have a history. As, I suspect, do you and "TTLS." I mean, really. Like who doesn't?
I always think of the time when I was standing in Jimmy's bedroom . . . when we lived on Milton Street, so somewhere between 1990 and 1994 . . . which would mean he was no more than four years old . . . and I was either whistling or humming the tune of "TTLS" when Jimmy told me, "That's the same as the "ABC Song." I was flabbergasted. I had, at that point, spent 33 to 37 years on the planet, most of them in the company of both of those songs, and had never realized that they were one and the same.
So that song always makes me think of Jimmy and how he showed that he was smarter than me when he was 4.
And for some reason Joe and I started singing it together after we read at night, so four nights a week (sometimes more) we duet on the song.
So that song always makes me think of Joe and how sweet it is to sing with your son at night.
Sorry, Jacqueline, you got left out of this one. But you have many of your own moments, so no crying.
"TTLS" was also the first song I could play on my trumpet. And, being me, I almost immediately began to fuck around with the tune. And I've been fucking around with it for some time now . . . trying out different set ups, pulling it inside out and back again. And just recently I decided, That's it. Time to get it down. And so for the last couple of days I've been working it out.
I think I'm finished. At least for now.
There are four trumpet parts. I play them all--no cheats. There are also three percussion tracks. One of them I play, the other two I used loops--the shaker and the ceramic drums. Mostly because I don't have a shaker or ceramic drums. And there's a bass track which I play, but it's an electronic instrument provided by GarageBand.
It took me quite some time to get it all together, but I think it sounds pretty good.
Here it is.
Feel free to leave a tip in my hat.
