The Secret of Red Gate Farm: Nancy Drew Old & New

I'm reading The Secret of Red Gate Farm to Jacqueline--the last of the Original Version Nancy Drew books in our possession, and thus probably the last Nancy Drew book we'll be reading.

It was published in 1931.

I thought I was finished reading / comparing the rewritten versions, as I've done with the first five books...but apparently I'm not. I went to Internet Archive and started reading the 1961 rewrite of The Secret of Red Gate Farm

And got a surprise.

The first five rewritten books had very little in common with the original versions. Other than the titles and the barest overall plot similarities, the rewritten versions were new books. This time around, though, there's very little difference between the two versions. Page after page is almost exactly the same. There are only two categories in which things have been changed: (1) the new version has been shortened, and some events have been compressed, while others have been left out, and (2) some of the harsher edges have been taken off. For example, in the original

But in the rewrite,

Which isn't much nicer, but is at least not as direct. Interesting that the re-writer also felt the need to change "spend my vacation" to "spend a vacation." What's up with that?

Back to the books.

Thanks for your support.
