I Am a Barbarian by Edgar Rice Burroughs

"The State is torn into two factions precisely as though we were in a condition of civil war, and one of these factions calls itself the party of Agrippina. It is high time that energetic action should be taken against certain of the heads of this party, so as to abate some of the mischief they are working."

That's from the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, I Am Barbarian. Which is a novel about the Roman Empire in its worst days, as crazy * leaders  (mostly Caligula, but with a little bit of Nero in there as well) did their best to bring everything to ruin.

It's just a piece of historical fiction. And not even a very popular one. In fact, it looks like this might have been Edgar Rice Burroughs' least popular novel, as it was never published during his lifetime, was finally published in 1967 by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. in a limited edition of 200 copies, and was only republished once as a paperback in 1975--which is identified as "#1,201,967 in Books" in its Amazon listing.

So nothing to worry about. It's not a commentary on the current political state of the United States of America. And the clearly insane Agrippina (Caligula's mother) is definitely not a stand-in for Donald Trump, and her party is not in any way similar to the Republican Party.

Not at all.

* And I mean that literally. Literally literally.
