Wasaaaaaaaaaa

I've really been enjoying my Trader Joe's Whole Grain Crispbreads. But when I saw these Wasas in the store I thought I'd give them a try and see how they measured up.

It wasn't love at first bite. In fact, when I took my first Wasa out of the package I couldn't help but notice how light it was as compared to one of the TJWGCs. Literally, that is: 9 grams as opposed to 24 grams. And, of course, the difference in density was also immense  --since both of these cracker-type things are more or less the same dimensions. So I wasn't impressed. And the taste? It was significantly less meaningful than the TJWGCs. So my next thought was, "I don't think I'll be buying these things again."

But oh.

Oh.

I looked at the ingredients and had a little startle.

First, have a look at the TJWGC label:

I am by no means an expert on such matters, but 3 grams of dietary fiber and 4 grams of protein for a mere 110 calories? I'm calling that a big win.

(For the sake or perspective, abar has .8 grams of dietary fiber and 3 grams of protein for 215 calories. And you don't even want to know about the sugar comparison. (Unless you do, in which case, as you can see, the TJWGC puts 1 gram of sugar into your gut, while the  doodles you up for 20 grams. Which is, btw, about 40% of the sugar you're "supposed" to have in a day. So there is that.)

And I do most surely love those TJWGC-rispbreads. In fact, my kids--who are not what you would call willing healthy eaters--even like them.

However . . . here's what I found on the back of the Wasa crispbreads package:

And that is a big Holy Fuck moment, isn't it? It means that I can eat four of these motherfuckers for about the same calorie count as one TJWGC . . . which, btw, puts the body weight firmly in favor of the Wasa camp at 36 grams to TJWGC's 24 grams--and I don't know if size counts, but I know that weight sure as hell does when it comes to packing your gastro-intestinal system, and with those four Wasas, I get 12 grams of dietary fiber (¡that's about 1/3 of what you should be getting in a day . . . from a sometimes snack food!) . . . 8 grams of protein . . . and 0 grams of sugar.

Dip me in shit and roll me in Wasa Flaxseed Crispbread crumbs and call me a cracker. I have found my new crispy friend.
