I was driving home after a rather bountiful visit to the library (Best of the Doobies, Blackstar, and Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit on cd, Our Town--with Paul Newman!--on dvd, and the novel The Good Brother by Chris Offutt), and the radio was playing the local NPR station, when an announcement caught my ear: a warning that the program to follow was not for all listeners, as it frequently used "The F Word . . . Feminism." Well, cheap shot right off the bat, but I let it be. Venisoon after the announcer asked each of his guests . . . at least three women . . . to give their personal definition of feminism. I thought that was exceedingly stupid, but it immediately got stupider. Each of the women defined feminism as a stance which sought to defend the rights of all genders, races, and sexual proclivities. That is some serious bullshit. The word is derived from the French word, féminisme, which was coined by Charles Fourier in 1837. And historically, etymologically, and logically it means the "advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes." If you want to say that feminism also supports other movements which seek equality for _________, fine, but a word doesn't mean something else just because you want to be more politically correct.
(Flashback:
I was also amazed at how snotty the women on the panel were. To one listener's question, the reply was, "That's silly." Several other replies were along the lines of, "If you knew more about feminism, then . . . . " And as for the role of men in feminism? "Men are welcome to come and listen, but not participate." Holy shit. That's not feminism, it's bitchism.
Of course, it's not acceptable to say such things. It immediately means that you are a misogynist, since you have not passively accepted bullshit. Same old same old. I really am beginning to dislike Liberals as much as I dislike Conservatives. Doesn't anybody want to just drink the fucking glass of water?
P.S. It's probably useless to add that I fully support a feminist agenda, have nothing but love in my heart for people of all races, genders, and sexual proclivities (except ones aimed at children or at harming people in a non-consensual manner), and don't give a flying fuck about your country of origin, religion, or number of phalanges. But I added it anyway.
