Just read a little exchange in Lucifer's Hammer that made me smile a bit. Don't know why, but I just wasn't expecting something like this in a classic science fiction novel:
"What do you want?" Hooker demanded.
"To talk with you. To bring you the message of the Lord God of Hosts."
"Aw, fuck that shit," Hooker said.
Hooker is an Army sergeant, and so of course his response is totally real, and that's part of the reason this amuses me. And the casual and immediate dismissal of a false & twisted (but you'd have to read the novel to get that) religious perspective from a sham leader, that's most definitely part of it as well.
