Courtesy of Father Frederick Copleston's A History of Philosophy (this morning's reading including pp. 388 & 389 of the Omnibus Edition of the first three volumes, from whence cometh these words):
" . . . all that exists is either the primal Fire--God Himself--or God in His different states. When the world is in existence God stands to it as a soul to body, being the soul of the world. He is not something entirely different from the stuff of the world, His Body, but is a finer stuff, the moving and forming principle . . . . "
And just a bit later, there's an explanation of how the four Greek Elements transform from one state to another (fire to air, air to water, water to earth and also a bit of air, which then becomes fire; it's slightly more complex than that, as there are several examples of an element becoming part this and part that, but for clarity's sake, this will do), and this bit then concludes with
"Thus does the 'body' of God come into being."
Well. You had me at fire.
A lot of the ideas doing the Lobster Quadrille in my head of late are bouncing around there. A lot of it has to do with Waiting for Godot, but that demands more time and space than I am going to give it here. (In fact, I'm attempting to write a book on that topic--currently titled "Up" is the Place Wither Fire Moves (which I also got from Copleston)--but it's currently only 3,000 words long, so it'll be some time before it's coming soon to a theater near you, for sure.) And the idea that I've mentioned previously, culled from the Edgar Cayce Search for God group that we are all one person--an idea which still seems idiotic to me, but which is as persistent as a crow on roadkill. And the idea of God as Becoming, which has popped up several times (in different guises) in my reading of A History of Philosophy.
I guess it's stupid to say, but that's never stopped me before, so:
I feel like I'm on the cusp of putting some very big ideas together. Of actually coming to some understanding of what life is and what it's for and what role God plays in it. And what role I play in it.
That's pretty exciting shit.
But I need to do a lot more work. Mostly reading. Needless to say, I don't mind that one bit. I just hope that I have another 25 or 30 years in me so that I can get it done. (Or most of it. Or some of it.)
Good thing I've started dieting and working out, hmm? At least it gives me a chance at longevity after all those years of treating my body like a Chrysler Imperial in a backwoods Demolition Derby.
