turnip greens (1 cup)--80c
100g strawberries (100 grams)--33c
carrots (100 grams)--41c
banana (one)--105c
= a total of 259c
And then I got down to it. After the blending, it looked nasty--
--but it actually tasted quite good. The turnip greens gave it just a hint of a spicy edge. And the fruits gave it a nice consistency and a little bit of sweetness. And as for the nutrutional aspect . . . well, check this shit out:
turnip greens 3g fiber 1g protein
strawberries 2g fiber .7g protein
carrots 2.8g fiber .9g protein
banana 2.6g fiber 1.1g protein
= a total of 10.4g fiber and 3.7g protein
Which is a pretty good yield for a mere 259 calories. Here's some information with respect to that:
Re: fiber, the recommendation is 30 to 38 grams a day for men and 25 grams a day for women between 18 and 50 years old, and 21 grams a day if a woman is 51 and older. Another general guideline is to get 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories in your diet.
Re: protein, The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is a modest 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. To determine your RDA for protein, multiply your weight in pounds by 0.36 . . . which means that at present I need about 68.4 grams of protein per day.
So . . . my little smoothie provided me with about 30% of the recommended daily amount of fiber and about 5% of the protein. Not so impressive on the protein side, obviously, but that could easily be enhanced with some nuts or an egg.
Hmmm. I haven't been thinking about protein at all, come to think of it. And that number . . . 68.4 . . . seems kind of big. I wonder if I'm hitting that. And keeping in mind that that is a MINimum number has got me thinking. Might be time to check in on that bit of data, eh?
Meanwhile . . . smoothie = good. Will make more.
