Breaking Comic Book News: Daredevil #1 (2019)

I don't follow Marvel comics closely enough to know why there's another Daredevil #1...seems like there have been quite a few of them already * ...but the ad on Comixology for this one caught my eye because of this tag line:

You know how it goes, right? Tell me that there's a special edition of pretty much anything and I'm interested, tell me that it's only available for a limited amount of time and I'm ready to buy it. The price was right-ish...$4.99. So I took a look to see how much material this "bonus" would encompass. I was expecting maybe 44 pages total, something like that. And our survey said? 138 pages. Well. That was obviously a typo. So I went to the bottom of the Comixology page and hit the CONTACT US link and asked about it. SOMEbody else wasn't watching the State of the Union Undress, because a mere twelve minutes later (!) I received a response:

Hi there,

That page count is correct! Marvel Director's Cut issues usually include the main story, plus a ton of bonus features like the black & white art and script pages.

Thanks.

Best Regards,

Pat

Yowza. That's a spicy meat-a-ball-uh. And I do have more than a little fondness for Daredevil, for sure.

Doodley doodley doodley doodley doodley doodley doodley doo.

July 1966. Daredevil #18. The cover shows DD on a mist enshrouded wharf, struggling with a huge guy in a gladitorial-ish costume. 12¢. I'm in. I read it, not knowing any of the characters. But I like it. So in September when I spot "the next" issue on the wire rack, its cover featuring DD being menaced by a flying fat guy, I pick it up. Only to realize that it is issue #20, and that I've missed an issue. I read it. Am very lost, and not very impressed.

So I didn't get back to the title until issue #91. And I don't think I bought very many issues after that...although the covers of 108 and 109 look familiar...and I do remember the name Bob Brown (artist), so I undoubtedly had a few of the issues that he did...but I didn't really come back to DD until issue #158...which was the first time that Frank Miller's art graced its pages. Yeah, that one is worth a few bucks nowadays. Hmm? No, I don't have it anymore. When I decided to propose to Jo Ann, I didn't have anywhere near enough money to buy an engagement ring, so I sold off some of my comic books...Daredevil #158 among them. Well, the marriage didn't work out, but still, no regrets. When you do something for love, there really shouldn't be any buyer's remorse. Or seller's remorse, as the case is here. ANYway, after discovering Frank Miller, I came on board pretty hard, and I still have issues 159, 164,171-202, 208-209, 226-233 (and am willing to sell for a good price and to the right home). I suspect that the holes in that run have more to do with the difficulty of getting issues off the newsstand (we're talking about late 1979 into the mid-80s, so the direct market was just getting onto its feet, as I recall...plus I was in school, newly married, all of that) than lack of interest.  Because that was a good run. When it ended, I wasn't inclined to continue a regular relationship with DD, but I have checked in on him from time to time over the years. Saw the movie. Saw all three seasons of the most excellent Netflix show.

So a(nother) new #1? Sure, I'm in.

News as it happens.

And get this, the last three #1s came out in 2011, 2014, 2015...and now there's a 2019.

UPDATE: So if you're like me, you always wonder about those "sales." Are they real? Well, I can tell you that so far as Comixology is concerned, they are. I just looked in on Daredevil #1 Director's Cut today (2/28/19) and it now costs $7.99. He who has ears....
