As I may have mentioned previously, I'm not a big fan of MSNBC's Ari Melber. He seems so desperate to shoehorn references to rap songs into his "news" presentation on The Beat that he reminds me of a middle aged high school teacher who is trying to sound cool and street to his students. Which is about as pathetic as it gets.
But I occasionally tune in and see him, because (1) MSNBC still tends to be my go to station, warts and all, (2) he seems to sit in for just about everyone on MSNBC, so sometimes it's hard to avoid him, and (3)...no, just the two, I guess.
Tonight I was doing other things, so when MTP ended I didn't switch the channel, and along came Ari. And there were a couple of stories I was interested in, so even after he started grating my ass I didn't change the channel. But then a rapper...Havoc...came on. I should have known that it was time to go to CNN, but I was still only paying a little bit of attention, so I didn't. And Ari asked Havoc something like, "What if Trump forced another government shutdown?" Havoc responded by saying, "That would be retarded."
The former congressman (Joe Crowley) sitting beside this so-called Havoc laughed.
Ari said, "...or another way of putting that would be...."
And that's the way it goes, right? Imagine a guest on a news program using a racist word or a misogynistic word or an anti-Semitic word or a homophobic word or...well, just about any kind of hate language. Would the other guests laugh? Would the anchor calmly say, "Well, another way of putting that would be...." Of course not. There would be an Immediate Fucking Shitstorm.
But hey...since we're only insulting people with disabilities...why make a big deal about it?
“The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.”
Hubert Humphrey
