Like most of the teachers I know, I work weekends. I get up at 5 am (sometimes earlier) and get in a few hours before anyone else is stirring, and I often spend a good chunk of the afternoon and even some of my evening at work. It's part of the gig. I don't regret it--though I am sick to fucking death of people saying things like, "Teachers have it so good--they are off work at 2:20 every day." Anyone who thinks that should follow me around for a week. At any rate, JCPS email and (cue the echo chamber) Infinite Campus (yes, I am starting a petition to have it renamed Enduring Campus) are useful tools in terms of getting the job done. In fact, there is big talk about putting teacher gradebooks online, and if/when that happens, Infinite Campus will be a necessity rather than an accoutrement. And what have I just spent the last fifteen minutes doing? Trying to access my school email account. Trying to log on to Infinite Campus. Trying to check with the online Substitute Center to make sure that my preferred substitute will be in my classroom on Wednesday. And you know what? I can connect with the Jefferson Country Public Schools page for Jefferson City, Missouri. I can connect with Louisville's Jefferson County Public Schools Lifelong Learning page if I decide that I need to Build My Skills. I can even--I shit thee not--connect with the Journal of Chinese Political Science page and drop a line to EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Sujian Guo or even check out a sample issue . . . ooh, "Democracy and the Governing Party (执政党): A Theoretical Perspective" . . . very interesting . . . . Alas, I cannot connect with my work email. I cannot check my ever-changing class rosters. I cannot access my online gradebook--but I haven't been taught how to use that, anyway. I cannot check on my preferred substitute for Wednesday.
And all I can think is . . . we're spending $1.2 billion a week in Iraq . . . and all I got is this lousy blogspot.
