I have never been a devotee of 24 (although I was very devoted to Elisha Cuthbert, who played Jack Bauer--Kiefer Sutherland--'s daughter Kim in years gone by.) I've watched a few shows here and there, though, and I usually found them exciting, even if they were often implausible and stupid. But Joe is a big fan, so I sat down to watch the latest, Jack Bauer-less iteration after the Super Bowl: 24: Legacy.
And it was quite cool to see that this time around the spy guy was a black man--Corey Hawkins, who plays Eric Carter. Mr. Hawkins is a young feller (a mere 28 years old), and he doesn't have a lot of credits on his resume . . . though he did play Dr. Dre in the excellent and very much overlooked Straight Outta Compton and had a recurring role on The Walking Dead (Heath). He does a pretty good job here, getting beaten up and shooting people and all of the usual business.
But why oh why does Agent Carter (heh heh) have to have a brother who is a ghetto drug lord? And why oh why is his adversary a group of Islamic terrorists? Haven't we had enough of that? Especially now?
And at some point in the second episode the Stupid Factor blew through the roof.
So, to recap, we have a stupid plot, racist depiction of blacks and Muslims, and with almost 18 million viewers, I suspect that the series will be a hit.
With black thug drug dealers and crazed Muslim terrorists, how can it miss?
