Well, so to speak. I didn't do any calculations as to what my heart rate was during this endeavor, so it's not officially a "low intensity workout." But I was just getting ready to settle down with Jo Nesbø and a cup of coffee this morning when I said to myself, "Self, what if instead of sitting on the sofa and reading, you sat on your Weslo Momentum G 3.2 Bike/Elliptical 2-in-1 Hybrid Trainer and did a little light peddling while you read?" And my self was agreeable to that bit of experimentation, only admonishing me to, "Just remember, don't push it. You know how you are." I agreed that (1) I did know how old I are, (2) that I do have a propensity to push it, (3) that the days when I actually could push it were mostly behind me, and thus that (4) it would be best to take it easy.
I actually only read for a few minutes before the phone rang, but I enjoyed a very nice & long talk with my #1>o< whilst peddling (slowly), and had a bit of time post conversation to do a little more reading. And the verdict?
Well, it was actually quite a pleasant experience. I had no problem focusing on my reading / conversation / reading. I was surprised to find that I actually did work up a little bit of sweat, but it was of the Morning Dew (as opposed to the Thunderstorm of the regular workout) variety. I don't think it even made me stink. And the numbers:
60 minutes
4,508 distance
706 calories burned
Um . . . say what???? I mean, shoe-uh it was a long session . . . 23 or 24 minutes longer than my usual bike session . . . but fuck, 703 calories? I mean, this was a very casual bit of a ride. Like my speed stayed right between 8 and 9 mph the whole time. I didn't even breathe hard. And I burned 709 calories? As in close to a hundred more than I burn on my Hard Ride? (Which I do enjoy, by the way, and certainly do not plan to quit doing, but . . . I mean . . . FUCK!)
CORRECTION: And then I discovered that my Weslo calorie counter was fucked. It was more like 400 calories. But hey, still, right?

So if nothing else, ahmo be adding a Long Ride With Book to my everyday routine. Or maybe a Long Ride While Watching Gotham With Joe.
CORRECTION: Not everyday, foe shoe. But I do enjoy this and it seems to do what it do.

I'd kind of like to know some more about this shit, too, though. So if you know anything on the topic of Low Intensity Workout, you know my name. (Look up the number.)
Part the Second:
I've done a couple more Slow Rides (now my nomenclature of choice), and it continues to be a very positive experience. There are several excellent things about doing it this way:
(1) I don't stress about it. Matter of fact, this morning I started pretty early . . . like 9 am . . . which is not something I would normally do. But it's not like other exercises, wherein I at least occasionally have the thought that "This is hard," or, at times, "I don't feel like doing this." This is just easy. Peasy.
(2) Once I get going, I invariably pick up a little bit of speed. My heart rate seems to be staying up high enough to keep me in Fat Burning Mode, too.
Speaking of which:
220 - Age = ____, and _____ x .6 = low end of Fat Burning Range, and x .7 = high end of Fat Burning Range.
So for me, that's 220 - 59 = 161. x .6 = 96.6, and x.7 = 112.7, so my Fat Burning Range is from 96.6 to 112.7.
My speedometer on my Weslo is also fucked at the moment (we should talk about Weslo at some point, but the upshot is that I still feel that I am well on my way to getting my money's worth, despite some REALLY serious issues along the way), but my "normal" hard (for me) rate is around 12 miles per hour, and I am definitely not pushing that hard. Maybe 9 mile per hour. It looks (& sounds) like this:
My foolish male pride won't let me go of my "regular" hitting it hard 40 minute session, but a little research might well cure me of that.
And P.S., son Joe took the picture of my back, and I just want you to know that I AM wearing pants.
