So . . . I watched Episode 2 of American Epic this morning. I'd started watching it last night, but pooped out and fell asleep. It was super-de-dooper great. I was particularly impressed by Son House, of whom I'd previously heard but didn't even know well enough to have an impression of. So I made a note to myself that I should mos def get to know him better.
And after the episode ended, I went to Spotify looking for some stuff, and somehow or other I ended up looking at The Harry Smith Project Live. I knew the name Harry Smith because of its association with David Johansen, whom I've loved ever since I first spun my copy of the second New York Dolls album, In Too Much Too Soon. (I still have the same vinyl copy of that album, by the way, and it is still one of my all time favorites.) And when I saw David Johansen's name on the very first song on The Harry Smith Project Live, "Old Dog Blue," you know I had to play it. And it was so good that I just let the album play on.
And by and by (track 11) "John the Revelator" came up.
Who's that writin'? John the Revelator
Who's that writin'? John the Revelator
Who's that writin'? John the Revelator
Wrote the book of the seven seals.
This version was by Nick Cave, and it was just fuckin' AWEful. (And I say that with at least a little bit of affection for Mr. Cave.) But it reminded me of how much I liked this song. And it reminded me of how effectively it was used in an episode of Sons of Anarchy that I'd watched a while back. And I was going to look up the chords to see if I could bang it out on my guitar, but then I decided to drive up to Mel Owens Music to ask about trumpet lessons instead. (Long story there. Perhaps for another time. Perhaps not.) So I didn't get around to it.
And then just a few minutes ago Joe asked if we could watch the latest episode of Fargo, and you'll never guess what song came up?
Mmm-hmm. "Who's that writin? John the Revelator." And you'll never guess whose version they played? Son House. Mmm-hmmm.
SUREly this power can be used to make me some money SOMEhow, right?
