I have a confession to make: I really, really really love Adventure Time. The show, the comics, the accoutrements. I have an Adventure Time coffee mug that I drink from just about every morning. I have a Jake the Dog keychain that is in my pocket or dangling from my car's ignition switch every time I leave the house. And I'm seriously considering buying all the available Complete Season dvd sets. And maybe a stuffed Jake the Dog as well.
So what's a little continuity between friends? I started watching The Complete Third Season this morning. And oh man, is it good. An everything burrito? Oh, yeah. If only I weren't trying to lose weight (fat). This show is so fucking funny that I just want to sit on the sofa and watch the entire The Complete Third Season straight through.
And then maybe start on The First Complete Season. And then read some more of the comic books. I've already read the first two volumes courtesy of my free trial of Comixology Unlimited, and they were quite fun. Speaking of which, the first five collected volumes are currently on sale on Comixology for a mere $3.99 apiece--the first of which contains four issues, the rest five, so that gets you 24 issues for a per issue cost of a smidge over 83 cents apiece.
They're currently on issue 62, though, so you'll still have a long way to go. And oh, man, there are also spin-off comic books and specials and original graphic novels and the MARvahlous looking Adventure Time Comics (the cover of the first collection of which features a very nice take-off on the cover of Action Comics #1. Unfortunately, it's currently listing for $14.99, which is too rich for my thin blood, but there's sure to be a sale sooner or later.
I'm not completely sure why this show appeals to me so much. It's very weird, which is always a plus. And it makes me laugh. And Jake the Dog is voiced by the same guy who did the voice of Bender on Futurama. And it has a very nice color scheme. But I think underneath all of that, it's the friendship between Jake and Finn that really makes it work. In a lot of ways, Finn is more realistic than most portrayals of children in movies and television shows. Which is very refreshing. And Jake, malleable though he is, is the best dog ever, real or imagined.
Enough talk. Back to the binge.
